Morrissey calls on Taoiseach to ban cruel hare coursing
22 September 2022

A big thank you to music icon and animal rights activist Morrissey for becoming the latest celebrity to call on the Irish Government to ban cruel hare coursing.

Ahead of a concert in the Gleneagle INEC Arena in Killarney this Saturday (24 Sept 2022), the singer has today written to Taoiseach Micheal Martin, urging him to stop the “abomination” that is hare coursing and pointing out “the majority of Irish people support a ban on hare coursing” and that the bloodsport “should have been consigned to the history books long ago”.

“As I understand it, Ireland is one of the few remaining countries that allows this abomination to continue,” Morrissey told the Taoiseach. “For nothing more than a bet or a lark, thousands of hares are ripped from their homes every year, crammed into netted enclosures, and forced to run for their lives in front of dogs. Some sustain ruptured organs or broken bones when they’re tossed into the air. Others are so terrified, they die of heart failure.”

“Surely, it is not hard to see that this is wrong,” he added.

Ending the letter, he urged Taoiseach Micheal Martin to “please take heed because there is something extremely depraved about those who enjoy watching animals being terrorised and the sooner Ireland distances itself from this cruel activity, the better.”

Thumbs up to Morrissey for writing the letter, which was sent on behalf of PETA. It follows a 2020 letter from Pamela Anderson who asked Micheal Martin to bring “reckless and cruel” hare coursing to an end in Ireland.

The former Baywatch star and Honorary Director of PETA wrote: “This blood sport is at odds with the warmth and goodwill that people around the world know and love Ireland for…It’s time - past time - that Ireland consigned hare coursing to the history books, where it belongs.”

She urged him to “ban this so-called ‘sport’ in which gentle, sensitive hares—wild animals—are torn from their natural homes so that they can be chased by hounds for someone’s twisted idea of amusement.”

A RED C opinion poll carried out in September 2019 found that a 77% majority of Irish citizens want the government to ban coursing, while only 9% want coursing to continue. A majority in both urban and rural areas want a ban.

A PETA petition calling on Taoiseach Micheal Martin to ban coursing has been signed by more than 50,000.
