Greyhound industry horrors: Join calls for an end to government funding
11 July 2019
Watch "RTE Investigates: Greyhounds running for their lives" and join calls for an immediate end to all state funding to the cruel greyhound industry and a ban on greyhound racing and hare coursing.
The shocking RTE programme revealed that 6,000 dogs are killed every year simply because they are not fast enough to win. It included horrifying scenes of dogs being dragged into knackeries to be shot in the head. One dog was seen writhing on the ground in agony as his merciless owner drove away.
The programme also highlighted the illegal practice in the greyhound industry of doping dogs to make them run faster or slower to influence the outcomes of races. Also shown were greyhounds with their ears chopped off or burned with acid (to remove identity tattoos before being dumped) and the hellholes that await Irish greyhounds exported to China and Pakistan.
The Irish public is shocked and disgusted at the revelations, which have sparked multiple protests outside tracks, boycotts of sponsors and calls for bans on greyhound racing and coursing. An opinion poll conducted by TheJournal.ie shows that a 79 per cent majority want the government to permanently end the state grants which are keeping greyhound racing and its associated animal cruelty alive.
URGENT ACTION ALERT
Say NO to the cruel greyhound industry – don’t attend greyhound races or fundraisers/hen parties/office parties held at greyhound tracks
STOP THE STATE FUNDING FOR GREYHOUND RACING
Since 2001, the Irish Government has paid out around a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers’ money to greyhound racing, including €16.8 million for 2019. Following the shocking RTE Investigates revelations about cruelty and killing, it is time for these grants to be finally ended. Not a single cent more of public funds should end up in this shameful industry. Contact Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe now.

Last September, ICABS identified 30 Supervalu supermarkets around Ireland which had sponsored greyhound racing over the past decade – https://www.facebook.com/banbloodsports/posts/1857546281027588 We contacted Supervalu Head Office with information about all the dog injuries and deaths in greyhound racing and urged the company to act. We received no response. It’s time for Supervalu to take action to stop its local stores from supporting greyhound racing again.
