Latest shocking statistics show 283 greyhounds injured, 96 killed at tracks so far this year
30 November 2017

Greyhounds are continuing to suffer and die in Ireland's cruel greyhound racing industry, shocking new statistics reveal.

The Irish Greyhound Board's dog death data was furnished to Clare Daly TD in response to a recent Dail Question. It shows that in the first ten months of this year, 283 greyhounds suffered injuries at tracks around the country. A total of 96 of these dogs were destroyed at the tracks.

The greyhounds sustained injuries to legs, wrists, shoulders, backs, tails, muscles and toes.

The latest figures follow similarly horrifying information published in the Irish Examiner earlier this month which confirmed that in 2016, 427 greyhounds suffered on-track injuries and a total of 139 greyhounds were put down.

These appalling statistics, and the suffering they reflect, make it clear that greyhound racing should be ended in Ireland and the government must immediately stop propping up the industry with millions of euros of taxpayers' money.

We are renewing our appeal to the public to stay away from tracks, to companies to stop sponsoring races and to schools and sports clubs to stop fundraising at tracks.

 ACTION ALERT

Don't attend greyhound races or community fund-raisers held at greyhound tracks (these are a significant source of funding for the greyhound industry).

In December, TDs will have an opportunity to vote on the payment of this latest grant via the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund Regulations 2017. It is vital that you contact your local TDs and demand that they vote against it. Find TD contact details at http://www.oireachtas.ie/members-hist/default.asp?housetype=0&HouseNum=32&disp=mem
