Sinn Fein politicians ignore appeal and again wish "best of luck" to cruel coursers
23 November 2016
Shame on the three Sinn Fein politicians who have once again wished the "best of luck" to cruel hare coursers in Kerry. An advert in the booklet for the Listowel hare coursing meeting sees Martin Ferris TD and Kerry County Councillors Dianne Nolan and Robert Beasley conveying "Best of luck to Listowel Coursing Club".
The three have restated their message of support to the coursers, despite an appeal last year after an identical advert was published in the booklet. Back then, ICABS told them about the suffering caused to hares used at Listowel coursing - including a hare severely mauled by greyhounds and put down as a result of injuries, 12 hares caught and pinned by greyhounds with three dying and 7 fatalities at a meeting in 2011. At the 2015 meeting, three hares “required assistance”, i.e. were hit and mauled by the dogs.
It is an absolute disgrace that in 2016 any public representative would convey a good luck message to those involved in terrorising, injuring and killing Irish wildlife in a bloodsport that brings shame on the nation.
ICABS has brought the Listowel Coursing Club advert to the attention of Sinn Fein's head office and renewed an appeal to the party to modernise its animal welfare policies and back a ban on hare coursing and foxhunting.

Dear Minister,
I am one of the majority who want hare coursing outlawed. I am writing to urge you to permanently withdraw the licence you issued to the Irish Coursing Club. In coursing, hares suffer at all stages - during the capture, during the time they are kept in captivity and during the coursing meetings where they run for their lives in front of greyhounds. Among the injuries recorded are broken legs, damaged toes and dislocated hips. Every season, hare injuries and deaths are documented. I ask you to please act on the wishes of the majority, show compassion and permanently revoke the licence. Yours sincerely, [Name/Location] |

An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny
Contact all your local TDs now. Demand that they urgently push for a ban on hare coursing and all bloodsports. Tell them you are one of the majority who want coursing banned. Remind them that coursing is already illegal in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. Urge them to respect the wishes of the majority of the electorate and back a ban.
