Ireland's hare coursing cruelty continues at Westport/Castletowngeoghegan and Cappoquin/Dungarvan

Hares are again running for their lives this weekend as Ireland's cruel hare coursing continues. At the Westport/Castletowngeoghegan and Cappoquin/Dungarvan coursing meetings, hares are being used as live bait for greyhounds to chase.

WESTPORT
Loughrea & Westport coursing meeting, October 2009
"Two found dead in paddock on Monday morning - autopsy carried out on these 2 animals - one died from well established pneumonia (likely to have been ill prior to capture) the other died from natural causes. One died during transportation from Loughrea to Westport." From a ranger report.
Westport, Co Mayo, October 2005
20 hares used by coursers at a meeting in Westport, County Mayo were "poor runners and appeared to be suffering from malnutrition", according to the NPWS conservation ranger who monitored the two-day meeting.
CASTLETOWN-GEOGHEGAN
Castletown-Geoghegan, Co Westmeath 14/15 December 2013
Coursers stated that 2 hares "required assistance" and were examined by vet, who treated 2 for injuries and stated that 6 were "not suitable" for coursing.
Castletown-Geoghegan, Co. Westmeath, December 17/18, 2011
6 hares hit by muzzled dogs, with 1 “bad grazing”. Vet stated 2 hares were injured.

Ranger stated that 4 hares were struck by greyhounds, with three being injured.
CAPPOQUIN
Cappoquin, Co Waterford (11/12 Nov. 2006)
Three hares were struck by dogs.
DUNGARVAN
Dungarvan, Co Waterford (16/17 Nov. 2006)
The ranger noted two hares carrying injuries: "one hare was carrying a hind leg and one had a damaged hind toe."

I am one of the majority who want hare coursing outlawed. I am writing to urge you to permanently withdraw the licence you issued to the Irish Coursing Club. In coursing, hares suffer at all stages - during the capture, during the time they are kept in captivity and during the coursing meetings where they run for their lives in front of greyhounds. Among the injuries recorded are broken legs, damaged toes and dislocated hips. Every season, hare injuries and deaths are documented. Contact all your local TDs now. Demand that they urgently push for a ban on hare coursing and all bloodsports. Tell them you are one of the majority who want coursing banned. Remind them that coursing is already illegal in Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales. Urge them to respect the wishes of the majority of the electorate and back a ban.
