Ireland's hare coursing cruelty continues in Cavan, Clonmel and Ballyduff
05 November 2015
Hares are again running for their lives this Friday, Saturday and Sunday as Ireland's cruel hare coursing continues. At the Cavan/Dungannon, Clonmel and Ballyduff coursing meetings, hares are being used as live bait for greyhounds.
See below for more details about what happened to hares at these locations in previous years.
It's time for a ban on Ireland's cruel coursing. Please join us in renewing our appeal to Minister Heather Humphreys to show compassion for the hares and permanently withdraw the licence she shamefully issued for this cruelty. See action alert below.
CAVAN AND DUNGANNON*
* Note: Dungannon coursers hold their meeting in Cavan due to the fact that hare coursing is illegal in Northern Ireland.
Cavan/Dungannon, Co Cavan/Tyrone - 14, 15 16 November, 2014
Coursers state 3 hares "required assistance" (meaning hares were hit/mauled by greyhounds) and 3 examined by vet. Coursers also state that 1 hare died after it "hit post while being reboxed for release". No post mortem carried out on this hare.
Cavan 15/16/17 November 2012
Coursers stated that 5 hares "required assistance" and 5 examined by vet, and one declared "unsuitable for coursing" on day 3.
BALLYDUFF
Ballyduff, Co Kerry November 15/16/17 2013
Coursers stated that 6 hares "required assistance", 6 were examined by vet, 1 was certified injured and 1 put down by vet.
Ballyduff, Co. Kerry - November 16/17/18, 2012
2 hares were hit
Ballyduff, Co. Kerry, November 18/19, 2011
4 hares hit by dogs, and 1 died of “natural causes”. Despite the fact that it was stated that there was veterinary involvement, the vet’s report made no mention of the hare death.
Ballyduff, Co. Kerry (18/19 November, 2006)
4 hares were hit over the two days, with one having to be put down due to injuries. The ranger commented on the "very bad weather and heavy rain".

SAMPLE LETTER
(If you have time, please compose your own personal letter. Otherwise, feel free to send the short sample letter below. Be assertive, but polite, in all correspondence. Thank you.)
Dear Minister,
I am one of the majority who want hare coursing outlawed. I am writing to urge you to permanently withdraw the licence you issued to the Irish Coursing Club. In coursing, hares suffer at all stages - during the capture, during the time they are kept in captivity and during the coursing meetings where they run for their lives in front of greyhounds. Among the injuries recorded are broken legs, damaged toes and dislocated hips. Every season, hare injuries and deaths are documented. I ask you to please act on the wishes of the majority, show compassion and permanently revoke the licence. Yours sincerely, [Name/Location] |
