Jack Charlton and cruel mink hunting
09 June 2015
Jack Charlton is in the news this month, having received a standing ovation before the Ireland-England match at Lansdowne Road. A former footballer and manager, Charlton is famous for his involvement in sport. What's lesser known is his shameful past involvement in the cruel bloodsport of mink hunting.
This video, narrated by Charlton, shows him participating in a mink hunt in England at which a mink desperately climbs a tree in an attempt to escape the pack of hounds.
The sickening footage shows Charlton smiling up at the cornered mink who is moments from death. Hunters can be heard laughing as the mink runs along the branches.
"There's no escape now for it," Charlton says. "It will either be shaken down from the tree and killed by the hounds or a gun will be borrowed from a farm and it'll be shot."
As he looks on, a member of the hunt climbs the tree and shakes the animal out of the branches. It falls into the water and is torn apart by the hounds.
Jack Charlton's participation in mink hunting is also exposed in the book "Outfoxed" by Mike Huskisson. A photo shows "hunting fanatic" Charlton at a 1982 hunt helping a terrierman dig for a mink. You can read the book at https://books.google.ie/books?id=lB6F9z9D-9IC&lpg=PP1&pg=PA164#v=onepage&q
Mink hunting is now illegal in the UK but continues in Ireland. Find out more about the cruelty of mink hunting and our campaign to get it banned.
ACTION ALERT
Appeal to the Minister for Arts & Heritage to ban mink hunting. Tell the Minister that it's cruel to the mink and also causes disturbance to the protected otters who inhabit the same stretches of river.
