Ireland's cruel hare coursing continues this weekend
21 November 2014

Hares are again running for their lives this weekend as Ireland's cruel hare coursing continues. At Balbriggan, Enniscorthy, East Donegal, Knockgraffon, Killimer/Kilrush, Rathcormac and Rathkeale, hares will be used as live bait for greyhounds.

See below for more information about what happened to hares at these meetings in recent years.

Please join us as we renew our appeal to Minister Heather Humphreys to show compassion for the hares and withdraw the licence she shamefully issued for this cruelty.

BALBRIGGAN

Balbriggan, November 26/27, 2011
9 hares hit, 1 injured, according to NPWS ranger, with vet’s report stating that 2 hares were injured and 2 “sick or otherwise unfit” after coursing, and ICC control steward stating that 1 died of natural causes, and 1 injured hare released – did this receive veterinary attention?

ENNISCORTHY

Enniscorthy, Co Wexford - November 23/24/25, 2012
On Day 1, 2 hares were hit, 2 injured and injected with anti-inflammatory by vet. On Day 2, 1 hares was pinned and 1 tossed, with 1 "poss" injury. On Day 3, 3 hares pinned, 1 "poss" injury. Vet stated that 2 hares were injured and 2 "sick or otherwise unfit" after coursing event.

Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, November 26/27, 2011
7 hares struck by greyhounds with 3 injured. Despite the fact that it was indicated on the ranger’s report that there as veterinary involvement in the meeting, the vet cited nil hares injured at the meeting, so it would appear that these hares were not examined

EAST DONEGAL

East Donegal 2/3 November 2013
Coursers claim no hare hit, while ranger cites 1 hare hit.

East Donegal, 7/8 December 2013
Coursers stated that 1 hare "required assistance" and was examined by a vet, who stated that 1 hare was treated for injuries and 1 considered "unsuitable for coursing", while ranger cited 1 hare injured.

East Donegal - November 3/4, 2012 1 hare hit, injured and put down. The form was not signed by any ranger, and there were no details about hare releases. Significantly, the ICC control steward noted on his form "Wildlife officer gave permission for hares to stay in park", presumably to be used for another coursing meeting the following month.

East Donegal - December 8/9, 2012
3 hares hit, 2 injured and 2 died of injuries.

East Donegal, December 3 and 4, 2011
Ranger stated 1 hare hit, 1 injured and died from injury.

KNOCKGRAFFON

Knockgraffon, Co Tipperary 23/24 November 2013
Coursers stated that 3 hares "required assistance" and were examined by a vet, who stated that 2 were "not suitable for coursing" on day 2.

KILLIMER/KILRUSH

Killimer Kilrush, Co. Clare 23/24 November 2014
Coursers stated that 5 hares "required assistance", and were examined by a vet who stated that 4 were not "suitable for coursing" on day 2.

RATHCORMAC

Rathcormac Co Cork 23/24 November 2013
Coursers stated that 3 hares "required assistance", 3 examined by vet who deemed 1 hare "unsuitable for coursing" on day 2.

RATHKEALE

Rathkeale, Co Limerick 25/25 November 2013
Coursers stated that 2 hares "required assistance", 1 certified injured, and 1 put down.

SAMPLE LETTER
(If you have time, please compose your own personal letter. Otherwise, feel free to send the short sample letter below. Be assertive, but polite, in all correspondence. Thank you.)

Dear Minister,

I am one of the majority who want hare coursing outlawed. I am writing to urge you to revoke the licence you issued to the Irish Coursing Club.

In coursing, hares suffer at all stages - during the capture, during the time they are kept in captivity and during the coursing meetings where they run for their lives in front of greyhounds. Among the injuries recorded are broken legs, damaged toes and dislocated hips. Every season, hare injuries and deaths are documented.

I ask you to please act on the wishes of the majority, show compassion and permanently revoke the licence.

Thank you.

Yours sincerely,

[Name/Location]
