TDs announce bill to ban hare coursing
31 January 2012

TDs Maureen O'Sullivan and Clare Daly have announced their intention to introduce an anti-hare coursing Bill this year. Appealing for cross-party support, ICABS President, Deputy O'Sullivan stated: "We hope legislation will be passed which will see the end of hare coursing and other blood sports in Ireland."

ICABS greatly welcomes this announcement and over the coming weeks we will be urging all TDs to give their backing to the Bill.

"The government has continuously declined to state whether hare coursing will be included in the animal health bill," Maureen O'Sullivan, TD outlined in a statement. "We wish to address this directly in the Bill we are pushing as we are concerned that hare coursing will once again be exempted along with other animal abuses."

Coursing "upholds a negative cultural attitude towards animals in general and their wellbeing", she added.

Speaking at an anti-coursing protest outside the Department of Agricutlure on Monday, Socialist Party TD, Clare Daly, urged TDs who are opposed to hare coursing to vote for the Bill, irrespective of the stance taken by their parties.

"If their participation in democracy is to mean anything, they really should go with their conscience on an issue like this. The overwhelming majority of people oppose this activity," Deputy Daly said.

A big thank you to Deputies O'Sullivan and Daly for pushing for a ban on coursing. Their new anti-coursing bill will be introduced during the current Dail term which runs until Easter.
