Hospice and suicide awareness group urged to reject foxhunt fundraiser
21 December 2017
Two Tipperary community groups are being urged to reject a foxhunt fundraiser which will see foxes terrorised during a night time hunt. The Premier Harriers' "Hunt for Light" fundraiser will involve hunters "going out with a full pack of hounds in the darkness at night".
"To see hounds work at night when fox is most active will be an opportunity not to be missed," a notice posted to Facebook states. The notice includes a photo of hunters on horses and a pack of hounds - https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10156020095607369&set=p.10156020095607369
The shameful event is being held in aid of South Tipperary Hospice Movement and Clonmel CSAW (Community Suicide Awareness Workers).
ICABS is appealing to both to reject this fundraiser on the grounds that it is an animal cruelty event. It is entirely inappropriate for groups working to alleviate suffering to associate with an event which will cause suffering.
A past Irish Field report confirms the Premier Harriers' targeting of foxes - "The majority [of 25 hounds] ran a fox out across the morning's draw and back again, but six dogs hounds went out on the Dualla side and crossed the road, before swinging back and re-crossing the road here. Unluckily, a hound got knocked down and killed on the road."
In fox hunting, foxes are pursued by a pack of hounds and chased to exhaustion. When caught, the foxes are knocked to the ground, bitten, disembowelled and pulled apart.
Hunt fundraisers are cynically designed to try and gain acceptance for the hunt in the local community by diverting attention away from the gruesome animal cruelty integral to the bloodsport.
